Necessary Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have the right tools:

  • Tea bowl
  • Chasen (bamboo whisk) or fork
  • Chashaku (bamboo spoon) or teaspoon
  • Fine sieve

Ingredients

  • 1-2 grams of matcha tea powder (about 1-2 chashaku teaspoons)
  • 60-70 ml of hot water (about 80°C)

Procedure

  1. Sift the Matcha

Use a fine sieve to strain the matcha into the tea bowl (chawan). This step helps prevent lumps and ensures a smooth consistency.
  2. Heat the water

Bring the water to a temperature of about 80°C. Avoid using boiling water, as it can burn the matcha and alter its flavor.
  3. Add Water

Pour the hot water into the bowl over the sifted matcha.
  4. Mix

Use the bamboo whisk (chasen) to stir the matcha and water. Move the chasen quickly in an "M" or "W" shape until you get a light, even foam on the surface of the tea. This should take about 15-20 seconds.
  5. Serve and Enjoy

Your matcha tea is ready! You can enjoy it as is or accompany it with traditional Japanese sweets.

Matcha Tea Variations

  • Matcha Latte : Add hot milk (or plant-based drink) to prepared matcha for a creamy, delicious matcha latte.
  • Cold Matcha : Prepare the matcha as described above, then add ice and cold water for a refreshing drink.
